Royal Group Expands Railway Freight Operations With Purchase Of 200+ Freight Carriages

Royal Railway PLC, a subsidiary of Cambodia’s Royal Group, has received 60 new flat wagons from China, which form part of a larger order of more than 200 wagons, tripling the railway operator's fleet to 390 wagons in total.
The national railway operator in Cambodia is signalling progress in its expansion strategy as it grows its ability to transport a diverse range of cargo such as containers, heavy machinery, construction materials, and other freight items. The company had already secured 25 wagons from Malaysia earlier in 2024, as well as 11 high-speed locomotives from Japan for passenger services mid-year.
Online, Royal Railway said, “We’re thrilled to announce that our newly arrived 60 flat wagons have successfully passed brake system and safety inspections and are now officially in service! Added with our existing 20 flat wagons to run the operation for our valued customers.”
Royal Railway offers freight services via rail for a variety of cargo types, including containerised goods, bulk cargo loaded directly onto wagons, and fuel transport.

CEO John Guiry said:
This is an exciting step forward as we enhance our services for customers. Adding these wagons underscores our commitment to supporting Cambodia’s economic growth through improved logistics.
The recently delivered wagons are part of a larger order of 221 wagons:
- The next shipment consists of 35 wagons and is expected to arrive before the end of 2024.
- 45 more are due to arrive at the start of 2025.
Prime Minister Hun Manet said in October 2024; “We are negotiating to strengthen transportation infrastructure. Railways and highways are both critical for national development.”
Currently, only two main lines operate freight in Cambodia – the Southern Line connects Phnom Penh with Sihanoukville’s deep-sea port, and the Northern Line links the capital to Poipet on the Thai border.
